Bareena / Kyogle Project

Dear All,

I am pleased to update you about Kyogle and First Nations Coach Tylah Robinson. I spoke at length with Tylah at the Tennis New South Wales First Nations Tennis Carnival held in Newcastle recently, where Tylah volunteered as a head coach. This event is one of four Australian-wide First Nations tennis carnivals that act as qualifiers for a final held in Darwin later this year.

Tylah was excited to tell me that she recently signed up her 100th junior player that also includes 24 Indigenous boys and girls she coaches for free on Thursday afternoons. Some of these kids are now joining in the Friday night social tennis events that Tylah also organizes. Meanwhile, Tylah continues with her nursing degree starting work at the local hospital by 6.30 am, allowing her time to do tennis coaching by 3 pm daily. Ash Barty is a big supporter of the Newcastle Carnival event and was a surprise guest on the day. Ash was pleased to hear about Bareena’s support for Tylah and the kids in Kyogle.

Ash was quoted by the media, “Through participation in sport, there are just so many ways we can help kids get better and dream bigger”. Well done Bareena, you have positively impacted on the Kyogle kids and community.

Following the success of the Bareena initiative, Tennis New South Wales plans to expand this program by drawing upon help from other clubs across the Northern Beaches and the wider metropolitan area.
Nikita Sayle, Tennis NSW -Head of Inclusion, Diversity and Programming, said “the goal is to provide more opportunities for First Nations youth to play and engage with tennis”. Tennis New South Wales will now target regional areas most in need. The Bareena community has already been generous, many have since asked how they can continue to help. The Bareena committee is also keen to support this initiative further. When more is known, the committee will notify members on how best we can lend a hand.

Warm Regards,
Ross Mclean – For the Bareena Committee

On Thursday 15th December we held our annual Xmas lunch in the clubhouse. This was the first time we have had the benefit of our new kitchen and it really did work well. We had an excellent selection of food, and no one went home hungry. The Club supplied the refreshments and fortunately we did not run out despite Barbara’s best efforts!

Everyone looked very festive but the standout outfit this year was worn by Michael Hyatt who wore a very warm Santa outfit throughout the day and managed to play at least three sets without expiring, well done Michael. The Best & Fairest went to Ron Stevenson for his sportsmanship and thoughtfulness to other club members. This year I was awarded the Carolyn Gibbons trophy and for once was speechless. Many thanks to the Club for this honour.

After lunch we enjoyed a brilliant performance by Nancy who had us all in fits of laughter as she recited her poem, well done Nancy, you never fail us. Anne also entertained us with her clever verse and then went on to sing with Bryan who had also rewritten the words to a John Lennon song. We went on to enjoy a musical fiesta from our multi-talented Ron who sang a few solos before being joined by Carolyn on the ukulele for some Carols and finally a great Sonny and Cher song.

We were interrupted for a short while by the arrival of Father Christmas (a new slim line version) and his very naughty elf! They proceeded to distribute the Kris Kringle gifts after they had checked that everyone had behaved this year.

Many thanks to all our performers for the time and effort they put in, its amazing to see how much talent we have at our Club.

Ross gave us an update on some of the goings on at the Club and thanked the committee for all their efforts during the year. Special thanks as always go to Jeff for his knowledge and expertise which makes the running of the Club much easier than it would be without him.

Many thanks to Kerrie, Suzie and Helen plus all the many helpers that made the day go smoothly. Gillian Pearce did a great job decorating the tables and numerous people helped with the clean-up but special thanks to the washer and dryer uppers – Roshni and Karyn.

Enjoy the photos

The Club Championships have been successfully concluded for the year and the worthy recipients have been awards their prizes. Thanks to everyone who entered, it doesn’t matter if you were knocked out in the round robins as you added to the fun of the competition which resulted in several very social days at the club.

The winners are as follows:

Ava Bushby & Peter Fysh

Craig Oliver & Roland Martin

Carol Townley & Carolyn Gibbons

Andrew Cheong

Congratulations to all the winners – Craig and Roland won for the third year running so opposition teams should start planning their strategy early in 2023. Andrew also maintained his singles title after a long and hot battle against Peter. Ava became the first women’s singles winner since 2016 and then went on to combine with Peter to take out the mixed doubles title, beating Sara and Jindong. Peter first won at Bareena in 2004, so well-done Peter for maintaining such a high standard over so many years. Talking of impressive feats, Carolyn Gibbons who has won many times at Bareena returned to the championships after a long break and managed to combine with Carol to win the women’s doubles. This was an excellent final against Sara and Caroline, which went to three sets and had us all biting our nails in the decider.

Many thanks to Jeff for all his support and advice during the competition which as always was invaluable. Also, thanks to the committee members who assisted me during the initial rounds.

Best wishes,
Maggie Lang
