Challenge Cup
The inaugural Manly Lawn Tennis Club versus Bareena Park Tennis Club Challenge Cup was played out on Sunday March 15th in a gruelling 6-hour, 43-set marathon, incorporating 24 members from each Club.
All was played with great community spirit and sportsmanship with the Veteran’s Division showing a competitive spirit the envy of many of their younger team members. Of note was the Paul Wigney & Owen Kennedy (Manly), tie break tussle against Peter Prager and Rod Keating (Bareena) with Manly winning an enthralling tie- break that brought whoops of delight from the assembled Manly supporters. The Mixed Doubles and the Ladies Doubles battled the very strong Manly pairings, but the Bareena ladies were largely outshone by their Manly Badge-playing counterparts. The Bareena Men's Doubles pair of Alexander Patten & James Mclean, Peter Fysh & Paul Kernaghan, Chris Rose & Craig Oliver managed to dominate the Manly men's pairings.
There were several injury related retirements but this did not prevent Bareena from eventually winning the day in an incredibly fought 22 to 21-set victory.
